Students and skilled workers are amongst those affected by the major shifts in the UK government immigration system, which will be in effect July 22, 2025. PhD holders have a threshold of 37,500 and STEM PhD jobs, new entrants, or ISL jobs RQF 6+ has a threshold of 33,400. Positions under RQF 3-5 on the ISL or TSL must pay a minimum of 25,000 or the going rate of the occupation, whichever is the higher. There is also an hourly minimum wage of 17.13 (48 hour week).
Care Worker Visa
- The Health and Care Worker Visa route to new overseas care workers (SOC codes 6135 and 6136) will close on July 22, 2025.
- Other workers who have been in-country and have worked at least three months can transfer to this pathway until July 22, 2028, and they are not permitted to bring dependants.
Transitional Arrangements
- Workers who are already in the Skilled Worker route by July 22, 2025, can remain in RQF 3-5 jobs, renew visas, switch jobs, or accept additional employment up to at least July 22, 2028, without the new RQF 6 requirement.
- Nonetheless, there are new salary thresholds that are applicable to any applications, including renewals.
- The purpose of these changes is to minimize dependence on foreign workers and respond to the issue of exploitation in such fields as social care.
- To retain existing regulations on eligible positions, employers will have to apply fast by offering Certificates of Sponsorship (CoS) prior to July 21, 2025.
